6 Things You Can Do When You’re Frustrated With Your Job Search

Tired of sending out resumes with no reply? Not having success in your interviews? It may be time to switch up your job search strategy.

Check out these tips to increase your chance of getting hired!

1. Have someone look over your resume.

Sometimes, all it takes is a second pair of eyes to spot a typo, formatting issue, or other problem that may have been interfering with your job search.

If you know any recruiters or human resource professionals, ask them if they mind taking a look at your resume. They may be able to give you pointers on how to put your skills and work experience (or lack of it) in a better light.

You can also ask other industry professionals, friends, and family members for suggestions.

2. Tailor your resume and cover letter to the job you are applying for.

Many job seekers make the mistake of using the same resume and cover letter for every job they apply to. While this approach saves time in the job application process, it also means your application may not emphasize all the skills and experience that are most relevant to any individual employer.

Rather than sending the exact same application to dozens of jobs, consider spending more time on each application and focusing your energy on only the most relevant positions.

To take a more tailored approach, be sure to thoroughly read the job description before you send in your application. Look for keywords such as desired skills and traits and be sure to include any that apply to you in your resume. You should also spend time researching the company if possible before an interview.

3. Practice your interviewing skills.

You don’t have to have an actual interview to practice interviewing!

If you feel that your interviewing skills could be improved, ask a family member or friend if they are willing to help you practice. Have them ask you common interview questions while you practice giving clear, concise answers.

Ideally, your answers should include stories about times you demonstrated the skill or how you would handle the situation in question. You should also be prepared to discuss your past experience, including any resume gaps.

4. Consider temp jobs.

If you’re not having luck finding a permanent position, hoping to cover a resume gap, or looking to try something new, you may want to consider temping. Temp positions allow you to meet new people and build new skills while still earning a paycheck.

In many cases, temping provides a good work/life balance and can be the foot in the door to a better position. It also tends to make for a faster hiring process, especially if you work with the right temp agency.

Believe it or not, there are many advantages of temp jobs

5. Revamp your networking efforts.

It’s easy to avoid networking if it’s not something you enjoy. However, professional and personal connections often help you find out about new opportunities before the competition.

In general, most employers would rather hire someone they or one of their employees are familiar with. Experts say that as many as 70-85% of employees ended up in their current position through networking, so don’t discount this tactic!

6. Sign up with a local staffing agency.

Staffing agencies match job candidates with employers who have open positions. They often vastly speed up the hiring process, saving time for both the worker and the employer.
